Little women book review

Alcott wrote the books over several months at the request of her publisher. The Little House books apealr to generation after generation for the same reason. This book shows the struggles and hardships of young ,or little, women during the Civil War. No matter the version, I’ve always loved the March family and their relationships with each other and those they adopt into their circle.

Alcott prefaces Little Women with an excerpt from John Bunyan’s seventeenth-century work The Pilgrim’s Progress, an allegorical novel about leading a Christian life. And anyway, is it cheating. It’s very much a domestic novel.


For devotees, the essence of the Little Women story remains, an for newcomers, it is a sweet film that should inspire them to explore the book and the more traditional adaptations. It has a sad loss, a joyful reunion, a love story, a writer finding her voice, and one of the most endearing families in literature. It is a very historical look on life during the Civil War, and all characters are great role models. Honesty, love, kindness, and tolerance pervade the book.
