Water deluge system

What is a deluge of water called? Deluge Fire Sprinkler System. The detection system is installed in the same area as the sprinklers.


When the detection system is activated water discharges through all of the sprinkler heads in the system. When this valve opens, water is discharged into the piping system and through the open sprinklers. This discharge must occur rapidly and efficiently in response to a fire.

The prime objective of a water deluge system is to cool equipment in a fire incident. Cooling water should arrive onto a designated target (valve, vessels, critical structural component etc) as soon as possible, to maintain the targets’ temperature below 1o C. These systems are equipped with a bladder tank containing foam. When a fire is detected a signal is sent to the releasing panel to open the deluge valve allowing water to flow. Foam-water deluge systems are those using foam-water sprinklers or spray nozzles and an air-foam con- centrate which is introduced into the water at controlled rate on the system side of the deluge valve.


This standard does not provide specific design guidance for dry pipe or double interlock preaction systems.

This standard shall not apply to water spray protection from portable nozzles, sprinkler systems , monitor nozzles, water mist suppression systems , explosion suppression, or other means of application covered by other standards of NFPA. In a deluge sprinkler system , water is held back in a separate supply zone, and is not sitting within the piping itself that connects with the sprinklers. Any failure of the system - especially in a harsh environment like an offshore platform - is potentially catastrophic. The system includes a 290-foot-high water tank filled with 300gallons of water , and it empties in seconds during a launch. Firstly, the sprinkler heads in deluge systems , as mentione are always open, and thus when the deluge valve releases the water , it will automatically flow out of every single sprinkler that that is connected to the water supply. The valve is opened when activated by a heat or smoke detection system.

A deluge system is a water mist system using open spray heads attached to a piping system that is connected to a water supply through a valve that is opened by means of a detection system installed in the same area as the spray heads. Foam- water systems are typically designed to work at a specified pressure and discharge rate for a total discharge time usually not less than minutes. A minimum density of foam- water solution is necessary to be effective, but higher densities may be employed depending on the system , foam use and intended purpose. When the system detects heat and or fire, the deluge valve will release water, dry chemicals, inert gases, or foam.


Upgrades included corrosion control, refurbishment of the elevated water storage tank, and replacement of much of the piping, valves, nozzles, and other components. Asian and American approaches have traditionally focused to deluge systems, often also called as “sprinkler” systems.
